The social campers over at M2C Innovation are back doing what they do: building modular tents that link up into full-blown campsite communities. The last time we checked in, they were focused on domes, but now they have moved on to Qubes. The new Qube tents are quick-setup blocks that offer enough height to stand up inside.Like Pods, these modular tents connect together with tunnels and create larger tent communities. They are also more affordable than M2Cs original tents and are proving quite popular on crowdfunding.
While the tall, straight sides of the Qube look anything but ideal for a windstorm, they do offer one very clear advantage, rising between around 7 to over 8 feet (2.1 to over 2.4 m) to offer standing levels of headroom in every size of Qube tent, from two- to four-person. In many compact dome tents, you will not be able to stand at all, and if you can, it may only be toward the very center at the highest point. Standing up is nice, but we are not sure it is not so nice that we want to give up the advantages of a dome tent for a broadsided cube. Perhaps we are just not that modest if we want to stand up while throwing pants on, we can always do so outside the tent.
It is easy to set up. Once the 10 pegs and tarp are in place then the tent is raised by setting the center pole, after which the 10 lines to the tent pegs can be set. The tent panels are not rigid and will flap in the wind, but having 20 pegs supporting the tent tends to distribute wind load over many points. When I purchased the tent, I set it up in the yard prior to an epic downpour and heavy wind. The tent did moderately leak but not so much as to make it difficult to clean up with a sponge and bucket (both of which I find handy to camp with). Since then I have camped in the tent only once when it rained. Prior to that experience, I had sprayed a 10.5 oz. can of "Kiwi Camp Dry Performance Fabric Protector" on the exterior to waterproof the tent. The can covered eight tenths of the tent before running out.
The Qube is as easy to pack away as it is to set up so you wont need to be an expert in origami to try and get it back into the bag when youre ready to come home. One of the major issues with standard tents is being woken up by the sun blaring through the tent wall when it comes up at 5 am so with the with Qube tent we have added a black lining to our material to block out the sunlight so you wont be woken by that early morning sun anymore.
Exceptionally nice design, Not only does its distinctive design draw favorable attention from other campers, I as an owner get a kick out of it. It is an exceptionally nicely designed tent with attention to details that make it a pleasure to camp in. My tent is an olive green color with a black hood. The tent is divided into 10 panels that give it a substantially circular footprint. The panels are seamed and have an internal waterproofing sealant at the joints. Each of the windows and vents can be closed. The tie-off points for the window shades within the tent are attractively placed. For me, looking up, when in a sleeping bag, at the configuration of panels, windows, and air vents provides a picture that for me is aesthetically attractive.
On the other hand, choosing the biggest tents possible may not always be the wisest option, as they can be much heavier, be tricky to put up for one or two people, and may take up too much space in your vehicle. Two smaller tents side by side rather than one large tent may also give you more privacy, which can be a bonus for longer holidays or when children are of varying ages. Parents may want to keep younger children in the main tent with them, while older children or teens might enjoy the use of a single or double swag.
